Rearview Mirror
I heard you came through town
Didn’t stop, didn’t ask,
Maybe you thought I was fine—
Maybe I thought so too.
It’s been so long,
Time has softened the edges,
Blurred the lines between
What was real and what we dreamed…
We gave it all, didn’t we?
Offered love to the gods
Hands wide open
But left with barely an echo.
Thank you, still.
For the pieces you left behind,
Even the ones that ache—
I carried them thru the desert
I clicked through memories
Turning pages in a worn-out book,
Rewriting the story
Without your knowing
They say you spoke of regrets—
Things left undone,
Words unsaid.
I find comfort in your lament
Rearview mirror can’t get you any nearer
Temptation fuels the hunger
Reconcile the memory to the ache
But the taste never satisfies
I saw you in a passing light
The air held all we never said.
And I knew—what’s lost can shape us still,
Even though we got pulled apart...
We both entered into new time
Yet Love itself never left
It we got past the story we told ourselves
And knowing that looking in the rearview mirror
Won’t get us nearer.
